10 Tips to keep your pet safe on the 4th of July

The Fourth of July is marked with wonderful fireworks and celebrations! These are great for us humans but may be overwhelming for our pets. Here are some tips to make sure that your pet is safe and comfortable during these celebrations!

  1. Keep your pets indoors. This includes pets who are usually outside.
By moving them inside, preferably to a quiet room with no windows, you can reduce the amount of fear and stress they experience.
  2. Make sure your pets have current identification on them. This includes collar tags and microchips. The fourth of July is the number one time for pets to run away and get lost. It is well-known that the 5th of July is one of the busiest days for Animal Shelters, so make sure your pet is properly identified and ensure they get home to you faster!
  3. Keep your pet away from human food and drinks. Many pets may try to sneak some food or a sip of your alcoholic drink, this can lead to a very sick pet.
  4. Leave your pet at home if you are attending a fireworks display!
  5. Keep your pet away from Glow jewelry. They may be fun and bright, but they can cause stomach upset and intestinal blockages if chewed up
  6. Keep your pet away from all fireworks, lighter fluid and matches. These can all be dangerous to your pets, either by causing burns and injuries or by causing toxicities.
  7. Monitor your pet closely if you are outside and it is hot. Heat stroke or heat exhaustion is a concern, especially while they are stressed.
  8. Create a safe place in your home for your pet. This can be as simple as a large crate covered with a blanket to reduce sights and sounds of fireworks, also providing a distraction can be helpful. These could include a new toy or a food-filled Kong.
  9. Medications are available to reduce the stress and anxiety your pet feels during these stressful times. Talk with your veterinarian if you feel medications would be helpful but have that conversation as soon as possible so you can have the medications on hand before the fireworks go off!
  10. Consider boarding your pet in a secure boarding facility if you have a full day of activities planned. That way they are safe and secure, and you can focus on enjoying the celebrations!
